This article analyzes Impact-Benefit Agreements (IBAs) negotiated between Aboriginal communities and Mining companies in Australia. They argue that IBAs have become more prominent because of the lack of government enforcement of consultation procedures, and that the use of IBAs has negative impacts on Indigenous peoples. The authors suggest that IBAs undermine Indigenous cultural heritage and further structural inequity between Indigenous and settler communities.
Free, Prior and Informed Consent is a new global model for relations between state governments and Indigenous communities. This article analyzes state-led consultations in Bolivia’s and Peru’s hydrocarbon sectors. Barriers to effective consultation include: lack of Indigenous ownership; Indigenous visions and demands not being understood; and limited or general outcomes.

Economic impacts of development such as royalties or employment and training opportunities are presented as well as different models for economic negotiation including Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) or joint ventures.
This article discusses a workshop that was conducted in Colombia in partnership between a U.S. based grassroots organization called Witness for Peace (WfP) and local community activists in Guatemala and Colombia. In the workshop, Guatemalans who had successfully been using FPIC to withhold their consent to development projects, taught the Colombians strategies with which to resist industry using community consultations and advocacy.
In this article, the authors critically review the character of the current FPIC debate as it relates to mining, and outline four conditional factors required to safeguard against social risk.
In an effort to identify key determinants of SLO outcomes in the mining industry, this paper presents a comparative case study analysis of four international mining operations: Red Dog Mine in Alaska, USA; Minto Mine in Yukon, Canada; the proposed Tambogrande Mine in Peru; and the Ok Tedi Mine in Papua New Guinea.
